Country vs. City

Lately I’ve been having discussions back and forth with Josh. We have a lot in common and our sense of living is definitely on the same level — we’re torn!

I love living in more of a city-like atmosphere because everything is a quick walk away, there so much to do, it’s nearly impossible to be bored, you always have places to take visitors, there are many people to meet and stories to tell. It’s just…exciting!

On the other hand, a country life appeals to me as well. It forces you to use what you have naturally, enjoy nature as it was intended, and lacks the stress of city life.

I think right now I’m very young. I grew up in a country scape away from the suburban parts of town… There was never anything to do, it took a 15 minute drive to reach town, and I got bored quickly. I love the quiet escape and the runs I used to have. Where else would deer come out at 8pm to run beside you before they disappear? It’s lovely, but also lonely and dull. I prefer a city life for now, but when we get older I’d say we’d go buy a cabin somewhere in the middle of nowhere and enjoy ourselves just as we are.

What do you prefer, city or country living?

I think I'm happier in a bigger city because that's the kind of environment I grew up in. However, after living in Wichita Falls for almost 5 years, I began to really see the appeal of living in a small town. People are nicer, your world is a smaller and simpler place, and often it's those slightly more rural areas where neighbors are still good neighbors, children get to be kids, and weddings get full page articles in the paper. It's a sweet place to live and grow up, even though it's far away from everything fun. I think for us, the ideal place would be somewhere in between. We both love living in Nevada right now because we have more to do if we want to, but since we're homebodies, we still ended up in a suburban area. I could really never live in full-on rural countryside… the BUGS! Also, I am a big crybaby about internet and electricity, definitely not a backwoods adventurer over here. LOL. You, though, I can see roaming the woods with Bambi and Thumper :)

I love the excitement of the big city but I also equally enjoy the quietness of a small town. My actual hometown is very smallish, but there are still around 25,000 people in the county. Usually, around here at least, we tend to stick to our own social groups which is usually peopled solely by family and very close friends. Neighbors make the cut, of course, but we don't usually go out of our way to be everyone in the county's friend. It is the one thing that I've not understood about this small county – we don't really form a cohesive whole :(
The city is great, though! I've always wanted to live in the city and revel in the big city lights! My real father took my brothers and I on a trip to Ohio and we traveled through Lexington, KY at night time. I was bedazzled! I loved the lights and I always get excited about being in the city at night.
However, like Paola says, there is definite appeal to a more country-like lifestyle. People usually look out for each other, there is less crime, and it is nice and quiet (usually)! I also enjoy the fact that there is so much beautiful country that is not far away, but you don't feel as though you live in the sticks :D
