DIY Natural Lip Scrub

I’ve been trying to wear more of my lipstick collection lately, but I found it hard after realizing how dry my lips were. There’s really one major rule to wearing lipstick — you just can’t pull it off on dry lips!

I’ve heard great things about the Mint Julips lip scrub from LUSH, but I just could bring myself to buy it. As much as I love LUSH, I thought this was something simple that I could make myself.

Here’s what I used:

  • 1 empty container
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons of olive oil (or try jojoba!)
  • A few drops of honey

That’s it! You can play around with the oil and make sure you have enough after you stir it together. The oil hydrates while the sugar exfoliates, and the honey has beneficial properties as well but I just like the aftertaste it leaves. No more dry lips!

I recommend following up with your favorite lip balm before any lipstick, and it’ll look even better.

Have you ever made your own lip scrub, or do you prefer to buy?

I absolutely love your blog, thanks for posting such amazing tips. Any ideas for a homemade body scrub??

      Thank you!

Some people use salt for body, but I still recommend sugar. Salt is a little too harsh on your skin. I’d mix the same ratio as I used for the lip scrub (obviously, make a bigger batch), but opt for coconut oil instead of olive. It’s wonderful for your skin, even though it’s a bit more expensive. But that’s a personal preference, olive oil is still fine! Add some essential oils for fragrance and mix well. Still simple!

If you have extra sensitive skin, skip the sugar and use grinded or steel cut oats instead. Much gentler and oats are soothing for sensitive or irritated skin. On the downside, this will expire very quickly so I’d suggest making and using the batch same day.

Love the recipe!  How long will this stay good?

Thanks! Honey never goes bad, and oil tends to last up to one year. Because these ingredients are mixed with the sugar, you can keep it at room temperature (no need for refrigeration!) for up to one year. Make sure not to let water into the container, as this will breed bacteria faster! If in doubt, give it the old smell test.

I also recommend making smaller batches so that you’re using fresher product more often.
