My Thoughts on Makeup Gurus

Posted in Beauty on Sep 28, 2010.

A part of growing up for girls is learning how to look good. Not necessarily to please others, but to instill a sense of self-confidence. I’ve talked to other girls in my situation who were late to discover make-up, and for girls like us YouTube has been a savior. Girls upload make-up tutorials onto YouTube and get millions of hits, providing tutorials and inspiration. I’ve learned so many tips from these videos, discovered so many great brands, and have gotten hours of amusement out of them as well.

But do you know the details about how some of these “beauty gurus” live their lives? Okay, I’ll admit it, I’ve fallen victim to the gossip forums. It’s intriguing to see these girls make these videos, update their Twitters, and post on their Facebook — and then have someone throw out some of their dirty laundry.

A reason to be wary! Here are a few of my favorites, some who I now no longer respect because of what they try to hide.

Michelle Phan

Michelle Phan is the most subscribed female on YouTube and is by far the most notorious make-up guru. Her videos are well edited, and she’s a beautiful girl. I watched Michelle’s videos for a long time, and she introduced me to the make-up videos on YouTube. However, there are claims (some with evidence and some without) that she is a pathological liar, delusional, egocentric, a gold digger, and just plain ignorant. Believing them or not is up to you. Here are some things Michelle Phan is accused of:

  • Giving away her adopted cat because she got bored of her.
  • Lying about her rabbit surviving a fatal disease by bringing up his death months later.
  • Lying about coming from a poor family.
  • Lying about almost being raped in NYC.
  • Constantly uploading pictures on her Twitter of extremely expensive merchandise that she buys.
  • Dumping her long-term boyfriend for a much older guy who is loaded with cash.
  • Deleting any comments anywhere questioning her integrity.
  • Overuse of black eyeliner and eye-enlarging contacts.
  • Advocating for her skincare line, but having terrible skin.
  • Dissing a video game or never playing at all, and then trying too hard to look like a “gamer girl.”
  • Her expenses: Flying in pizza from NYC? Jet setting all over the country? Buying expensive cars? Thousand dollar jackets? First class?
  • Her “at home” or “do it yourself” tutorials are sometimes bad for your skin.
  • She has a skincare line and tries to preach about how well her products work by incorrectly using scientific terms, or even making up words to prove her point.

Elle and Blair

Elle and Blair Fowler are two sisters who are very…interesting. I admit that I watch these two girls purely for entertainment. They do not use their real first names because they want privacy, but they use their real last name. (Is that even common sense?) They both started out doing innocent tutorials on make-up, but they are now so interested in making money off of their tutorials that most of everything they do, show, or say on their channel is sponsored. Here are a few things they are accused of:

  • Lying about their names.
  • Using product placement in their videos.
  • Using products they’ve been paid to advertise in their “monthly favorites” videos.
  • Not mentioning they have been gifted or sponsored anywhere in their video, only adding it to the FTC disclaimer at the very bottom of their information bar.
  • Not knowing anything about professional make-up, but being asked to do make-up for or being invited to fashion shows.
  • Getting nose jobs.
  • Getting hair extensions.
  • Having an insane amount of make-up in their collections.
  • Dropping out of school to pursue YouTube fame.
  • Only approving “gushy” comments on their videos and blocking anyone who dares to ask questions.
  • Pretending to act stupid and oblivious to be well-liked. (This has actually been proven with a video edit mistake.)

DulceCandy87

DulceCandy87 is a 23 year old girl who focuses on both fashion and make-up on her channel. I’ve been following her for a long time, because she seemed down to earth and I love her cute Spanish accent. She is a bit of an odd ball, though. Here are a few things she’s accused of:

  • Having a serious shopping addiction or hoarding problem. (Check out the closet in her videos.)
  • Every video being sponsored in one way or another.
  • Trying to disguise commercials as tutorials.
  • Being (or formerly being) promiscuous.
  • Having terrible or out-dated fashion sense.
  • Often saying things that make no sense; generally being grammatically incorrect.
  • Being “ghetto” and acting “White” to make more money. (I personally don’t believe this.)
  • Buying thousands of dollars worth of clothes, bags, shoes, make-up, and professional cameras instead of investing for her upcoming baby boy.

So my point is… I’ve been sucked into watching a lot of these girls do tutorials on YouTube. Some of them are more talented than I will ever be! But I also learned that you can’t really trust anything these days. I never would have believed some of these things that turned out to be true.

However, you really do have to put personal issues aside. What I really hate is when people try to sneak in advertising. Always, always, always read the disclaimer at the bottom of these videos, girls!

I'm always just looking at magazines and trying to copy the eye make up without actually knowing what technique or process was used to obtain the look. Make up tutorials on Youtube, why did I never think about this?! Maybe my makeup skills will improve!

On topic, I totally agree I hate sneaky advertising. If you're going to promote, just say so, there's no need to be secretive about it and gives you less credibility. I think out of the three you listed, only the first one seems truly moronic :S Claiming to be almost raped is just the most insensitive thing. I mean, that's how some people get the idea that rape victims "asked for it". Sigh.

Wow, I am now totally paranoid about watching videos from any of these ladies anymore, and those that you didn't even mention :O

I just found Kandee Johnson (http://www.youtube.com/user/kandeejohnson) and I like her attitude :3 Very peppy and seems to really have a lot of passion for happiness and making others happy.

I'm also a natural born skeptical cynic, so I take almost everything I see with a spoonful of salt – There is a downside to almost everything :(

Loved the post and am glad to see you somewhat active again!!

I recently discovered that forum a few weeks ago… and I was literally shocked and speechless.

Damn the e-drama! Is it so much fun to bash someone else's appearance and private life? Why caring so much about it? Been there, done that, not fun. I understand human's nature (fame always brings jealousy, critics and copy) but I find the downside in becoming (cyber)popular just so so ugly. I'm not taking sides because nobody's pristine white, but (today) I just don't get why people don't just take what they're offered for what it is. Like, it's the Internet you know. I love Michelle's tutorials and that's about it. I could care less if she lies about buying a Chanel jacket when it's a knockoff, flew off to Disneyland the day after her bunny died or doesn't do what she preaches. That's her call. I'm seriously glad that I discovered her channel before all the drama clings to her name. Gosh, I'm too old for all that shit.

@Jinny: Yes, those make-up tutorials on YouTube are amaaaazing. I really didn't know how to use make-up until I discovered this. haha! But I'm with you, I hate when people try to be sneaky. It completely ruins credibility, and that's something very difficult to get back once you lose it.

@Renee: I know, I was shocked! Kandee Johnson is pretty popular too, I have yet to watch her videos. I may just start! I watch a few others who seem genuine and that's what keeps me interested. Thank you so much by the way… I refuse to die on the internets right now, when I have so much I want to offer and so little time. I'm trying to get into the habit of daily posts. :)

@Sandy: Oh man… I couldn't agree with you more on the e-drama. I have never liked to be a part of it in any way, and that's why I read what those people have to say and move on. Do I still watch Michelle? Absolutely. Her videos are addictive and she's truly talented for that. Do I still think she's an inspiration? No, I think much less of her. However, my stand has always been that I can love what people offer and dislike them as a person. Whatever an artist does well — whether it's music, art, movies, or what have you — their personal life has nothing to do with it. Life is too short to hunt these people down and give them a bad name for every little fault they have.

  • http://after-hours.me Chrizta

I was wondering if you still updated your blog, but alas, it's a fault on my side since I haven't updated my feeds in Google Reader. :p

I admit I also follow make-up tutorials online since let's face it, YouTube has tutorials for EVERYTHING.

Sigh… These girls could have just sticked with what they do best, but then again that gets boring right? :/

  • http://one-parade.com/ Marjorie

Don't worry Chrizta, totally my fault! I actually just moved my blog from a subdomain to the main domain (again) and didn't announce it. It redirects, but I had totally forgotten about people's RSS feed links! Thanks for the reminder. :)

YouTube has really exploded… I go there for help on everything from clothes to make-up to exercise. But really, I already have a TV with scripted advertising. YouTube is supposed to be one person advice to another, so when I see some people turning into a streaming TV infomercial it irritates me! Then on the other hand, the drama makes it 10x more interesting. I hate to admit it, but it's true!

On this list, I only watch Michelle. Not on a regular basis though, and oftentimes purely for entertainment. To be honest, I don’t care much about what people say about them on that gossip forum. I’ve went there once and left, I couldn’t handle the negativity. If I learn from the person, I watch him/her, regardless of what their life outsid youtube is. I only watch a few anyway.

The ones I seriously watch are more “technique-focused”. For product reviews, I rely more on makeupalley.

“If I learn from the person, I watch him/her, regardless of what their life outsid youtube is. I only watch a few anyway.”
This is how I feel about a lot of celebrities and their personal lives as well. As the years have gone on, I think I feel this way more about Youtubers as well.

      Makeupalley is the best resource!
