Keep Your Keychain Simple

Sometimes simplifying your life gets down to the simple, everyday things. Most adults begin owning things such as a car, bike, place to live, etc. When this happens, chances are your key collection will expand. Bring in factors like cute keychain accessories and club tags, and you might have yourself a messy disaster.

This is my current keychain. To be honest, I wish I just had one key. Unfortunately, my life requires this full set: car, apartment, bike gate, bike lock, apartment gate, Petco club card, and grocery club card. I’ve tried to keep it to the bare minimum, as much as I do like decorative accessories and having club cards handy.

Here’s how you can simplify your keychain:

  • Take keys off. If you haven’t used a key in one full week, you don’t need it on your daily keyring. Have it handy somewhere else in the home.
  • Get rid of club card tags. Did you know all club cards can be pulled up with your phone number? You don’t even need a physical card! Keep only what you use on a weekly basis, or if the place you shop has self check-out and requires a scan.
  • Only one accessory! It’s okay to accessorize your keychain, but I find one should be enough. If you have more decorative keychains than functioning keys, it’s almost defeating the purpose.
  • Use a strap. Something I’ve been meaning to pick up is a keychain strap. This makes finding your keys easier, and gives you a better way to hold them if your hands are full. Feeling creative? Here’s a great instructional post on how to make your own!

Why should you simplify your keychain? It just makes your life so much easier! And you have to admit, simple keychains are much more appealing.

Does your keychain look like something a janitor would carry, or do you like to keep it simple?

I like to keep mine simple — house keys, mail keys, car key, 2 tags, and a bear from my alma mater.. The bear is my fav for the inner child in me..plus it doubles as an instant identifier and is the thing I grab when I want my keys!

I used to have something similar to your bear! Mostly because it was cute, but it actually served as a huge help for finding my keys. Now I’m thinking of just getting a strap for the same reason!

I have two keychains, one from amsterdam that my niece gave me and one that a co-worker gave me. It’s a bit longer than regular key-chains and it helps me find my keys. Plus its really cute :) I have 4 keys and four card tags..and of those card tags I only use one :/ guess it’s time to get rid of some stuff. However my keys are my minimum, which is great :)

Tamisa made a similar point and I agree… Sometimes a decorative piece ends up being more than decorative when it helps you find your keys.

I used to have an issue with card tags too. Once I discovered that I could just recite my phone number, I was left with two for convenience! Great to hear your keys are at a minimum too, it makes things less stressful. :)

Love the keychain in the last picture! I actually got rid of all my club cards since I just store them in an app on my phone. It might not be the most convenient thing though,  since sometimes the machines have trouble scanning them -__- But it’s definitely made my keychain a lot lighter and less bulky :)

Me too, that one has to be my favorite!

May I ask what app you’re using? I love that idea!

I used to have a pretty crazy keychain, but now I just have a carabiner clip, library card, and three keys on it. My dad used to constantly lecture me that having a heavy keychain could affect the socket where you put your keys in the car to turn on the ignition by putting too much weight on it and making it loose. So I took off my cute hula dancing Hello Kitty keychain (cry) and just kept the clip so I could easily attach the keys to my purse or a belt loop if I was lugging groceries upstairs.

Wow, I didn’t know that about a keychain’s affects on car sockets…! Josh’s keychain weights about ten pounds and I constantly nag him to get rid of old keys he doesn’t use. Now I have another way to nag at him. hahaha

I had some cute decorate things on mine too (Hello Kitty as well, who’d have thought?) but it started getting cumbersome so I’m down to the essentials. I had a clip but I now need to re-attach it. Super useful!

You know, I’m actually quite proud to say that mine is really simple.  I have a car key and car unlocker, 2 house keys and a key to my parents house.  That’s it! :)

Something so little that’s simplified somehow makes life easier, doesn’t it? Love it!

This is such a great idea!  I don’t have too many keys on my ring, but there are a couple that I don’t need every day.  Thanks for the idea!

I wish I could keep it simple. But i used to be ridiculous about losing my keys in bags…or just in general. So
